This is Your Brain on Government
Remember the old Commercial, "This is Your Brain on Drugs?"
How 'bout this Public Service Announcement?
The Government wants to do more than fry your brain, they want to box it up. Now more than ever!
Did you hear the one about the politician who wanted to think outside of the box?
... I didn't think so. And it's not funny. This is how the existing
order stays in power, and why, no matter how much, how loud, or how
long the major party candidates talk about change-- they don't really
mean it. Even now. Especially now.
How do I know they don't mean it? Because it would make them endangered species. It would be the end of the world as they know it. And as we know it. Our gain, but their loss.
To prove it I will challenge you to cite one example of any major politician or candidate from either major party who has proposed solutions to our economic crisis that don't involve taxation, regulation, bail outs and/or loan guarantees. Or how about energy? Which major candidate has proposed a complete and comprehensive end to tax credits, incentives, etc. that favor one type of energy source over another? Has anyone ever wondered how much gasoline would cost if it had to compete on a level playing field with any other type of fuel? And what about health care. Where's the creative solution there? Has anyone proposed a solution that has nothing to do with health insurance, public or private?
All anyone talks about is what shade of lipstick to put on the pig. No one seems to think that perhaps the pig is the problem. As a result, all we get from Congress is pork.
Just as addicts need intervention to interrupt the cycle of what the Friends of Bill (Twelve Step "Anonymous" Groups) call "Stinkin Thinkin" government addicts need an intervention too, and in the United States, that's just about all of us. It's amazing, isn't it, that the nation that was founded on the principles of liberty, self-reliance, ingenuity and initiative are now so addicted to government solutions to virtually everything that goes wrong in our society, that we can't imagine any other way remain civilized except continuing the progressive addiction to government. What do people say when something is wrong? "There oughta be a law!" When healthcare becomes unaffordable, "There should be universal healthcare," when Wall Street scoundrels make off with the pension money, "We need more regulation."
What's the difference between our addiction to government and addiction to cocaine or heroine or crystal meth? All of the above are progressive. With increased use, there is increased dependence. With increased dependence comes a need for an ever increasing dose just to feel "normal." The more we need the more we use. The more we use the more we need. The more the habit grows, the more it costs and the more it costs the more it controls our finances, our souls, our ability to thrive and prosper, and generally just ruins our lives and the lives of those who are close enough to get drowned in our wake.
Back in the eighties a psychologist named Anne Wilson-Schaef wrote about "process addiction" in self-help best sellers such as When Society Becomes an Addict. Process addiction is a false belief that the current inside-the-box process-- the rules that rule the world, the basic standard operating procedures of society-- is the right way, the only way, to live, to organize, to understand reality, and that it in fact is the reality. Sound familiar?
So when a social or economic problem arises in our country, the only solutions anyone can imagine is either a tax, a regulation, a law, a new government agency or department, some of the above, or all of the above. How is that any different from an addict who can't think of any other way to satisfy his or her hunger, thirst, anxiety, etc. than another fix?
This website, the Libertarian party and the libertarian movement it promotes, has all kinds of ideas, platforms, programs, strategies and proposals for solving our nation's problems and increasing our wellbeing and prosperity, individually and collectively, and not one of them is from inside the box.
