What if...

...potholes would be repaired within twenty-four hours
______________________________________________________________

Those of us who live in the northern half of the country are all too familiar with potholes. Most are not repaired within twenty-four hours, or twenty-four days, perhaps not even twenty-four weeks. Why? Because the government has a monopoly on the infrastructure. Highways, roads, streets are owned and maintained by the government. There is no competition. There's no incentive for the highway department to break a sweat to fix those pesky potholes.

But... what if the entire infrastructure were privatized? What if every highway, street, and country road were owned or leased by a private company that is paid by the number of times cars travel over it, using transponders such as the EZ Pass being used on tollways? Wouldn't the company that had the best record of fixing potholes, keeping smooth wide lanes open, making driving as pleasant and effortless as possible be the company with the most profit? And therein lies the incentive to fix potholes within twenty-four hours-- or twenty-four minutes.

But why limit it to roads. What if we took everything private? What if the government had a garage sale?
