libertarianQ&A
Q: Why do Libertarians seem not to like the government? Don't we need some government? A: There are some libertarians who call themselves anarchists who believe that the only good government is no government. Before we go on, however, we need to rehabilitate the image of "anarchists." In the popular definition, this term has come to mean those who wish to create chaos and the term anarchy has come to mean a lack of order. The academic and political use of the term means something quite different. It means the belief that everything government does could be done better in the private sector. It means that private organizations and entities can create order and civility in ways that work better than government approaches to the same. Other libertarians believe that a very limited amount of government in scope and authority is necessary to create a framework for liberty, but that the only legitimate role for government is to maintain the ideal climate in which liberty can thrive. To answer your question about whether or not libertarians like government, it should be clear that we do not like government that oversteps its role, that corrupts or is corrupted, that is wasteful, inefficient, and that essentially creates obstacles to liberty rather than creating a structure in which liberty is maximized.
